On April 21, 2021, Hitachi ABB Power Grids and General Electric's Renewable Energy Grid Solutions business (GE) announced a groundbreaking non-exclusive cross-licensing agreement aimed at reducing the environmental impact of high-voltage electrical equipment. This agreement focuses on the replacement of sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) with alternative gases, which will significantly lower the environmental footprint of the transmission industry.

The Environmental Impact of SF₆
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) is widely used as an insulating and interrupting medium in high-voltage electrical equipment due to its excellent electrical properties. However, SF₆ is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 23,500 times greater than that of carbon dioxide, and it can remain in the atmosphere for thousands of years. This has raised significant environmental concerns, leading to efforts to find sustainable alternatives.

Key Aspects of the Agreement
Under this agreement, Hitachi ABB Power Grids and GE will share their complementary intellectual property regarding SF₆-free solutions. This collaboration will accelerate the adoption of environmentally friendly gases, such as fluoronitrile-based mixtures, as an alternative to SF₆ in high-voltage equipment. According to a report by the European Commission, fluoronitrile-based mixtures could be the only viable alternative for SF₆ in certain high-voltage equipment due to space constraints.

This agreement paves the way for standard SF₆-free solutions for high-voltage equipment in the coming years. This will help utility companies significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions while also improving their ability to plan, operate, and maintain networks using standardized services and the same auxiliary equipment.
