In November 1949, the Executive Committee meeting of the International Democratic Women's Federation was held in Moscow, USSR. Executive Committee member Helen Gabrozo, on behalf of the IWF Secretariat, suggested at the meeting that June 1 be designated as "International Children's Day" to mourn the 88 children who were slaughtered by Nazi Germany on June 10, 1942 in the village of Czeclidize, as well as all the children who died in the war of fascist aggression around the world. Gaborozzo pointed out that the section was created to improve the lives of children around the world by guaranteeing their rights to survival, health and education. In 1954, June 1 was designated as the "International Day for the Protection of Children" to protect children's rights and the right of children to learn and to end child labor, leading to increased international recognition of the day as Children's Day.
