The 1785-L11B/E is a PLC-5 Programmable Controller, part of an enhanced series of programmable controllers. This controller serves as the core of each control system, interconnecting I/O modules—local, extended, and remote—along with various devices through different communication interfaces, forming a unified control solution.

The 1785-L11B/E features a built-in port for Data Highway Plus (DH+) or Remote I/O. The DH+ connection facilitates remote programming, monitoring, and peer-to-peer communication between multiple controllers. The Remote I/O connection supports real-time data exchange for I/O, operator interfaces, and other devices.

Several indicators are present on the front panel to display system statuses. The BATT indicator signals battery status (red when low). The PROC indicator shows controller operation status, lighting green in RUN mode and red when a fault occurs. The FORCE indicator turns amber when I/O forces are enabled. The COMM indicator displays communication status, turning green when active. Additionally, the Channel 1A status indicator is present to reflect its activity.

On the front panel, there is a 25-pin connector labeled as Channel 0, an optically isolated EIA RS232C port that supports ASCII and DF1 (full-duplex, half-duplex master, and half-duplex slave) protocols. A green indicator light signals communication activity for Channel 0. Additionally, there is an 8-pin mini DIN connector labeled as Channel 1A, used for DH+ programming and communication.

The three-pin connector on the front panel serves as a communication port that can be configured as a remote I/O scanner, remote I/O adapter, or DH+ communication link.
Remote I/O scanner mode enables the controller to exchange I/O data with remote devices, acting as a supervisory controller for other controllers in adapter mode.
Remote I/O adapter mode allows the controller to monitor and control its local I/O while communicating with a supervisory controller over a remote link.
The DH+ link on Channel 1A enables data transfer between multiple controllers or higher-level control system components. It can also be used for programming multiple controllers simultaneously. The maximum cable length for DH+ depends on the transmission speed, ranging from 3048m at 57.6 kbps to 762m at 230.4 kbps. For proper communication, all devices on the DH+ network must operate at the same transmission rate.
