ABB has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 10 gigawatts (GW) in its automation solutions for renewable energy projects in India. From initiating a 100-MW project approximately seven years ago, ABB has expanded its presence in the renewable energy sector, marking this achievement through over 300 projects across India that leverage ABB’s IoT-based PLC solutions. ABB's PLC-based SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system provides a robust automation control solution, offering real-time data collection and analysis to optimize plant operations and reduce maintenance requirements. This system enables operators to monitor and analyze critical plant parameters with ease, offering comprehensive visibility into plant operations. As part of ABB’s Drive Products portfolio, the utility-scale SCADA solution minimizes investment costs and operational risks associated with renewable energy plants. With India's increasing energy demand, the country is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and meet its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. India aims to achieve 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. Given that renewable energy plants can cut carbon emissions by over 24 million tons annually on average, ABB’s solutions are crucial in advancing the nation’s energy transition towards renewables, supporting the goal of creating low-carbon societies. AR Madhusudan, President of Drive Products at ABB India, commented, “We are honored to support India’s transition to clean energy. As India speeds up its move to a clean energy mix, technology is essential in optimizing the capture of renewable energy and ensuring the smooth operation of these plants. Our solutions are integral to this process, facilitating efficient operation of hybrid plants, including solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).” Madhusudan further noted, “Reaching the 10-GW milestone also contributes to India’s ambitious objectives for a sustainable and resilient energy system.” Renewable energy applications often demand complex safety calculations due to the need to manage vast data for monitoring temperature, pressure, and other variables. BESS is crucial in balancing the variable nature of renewable energy with power demands, ensuring a stable supply. ABB’s secure SCADA system employs its advanced AC500 PLC to oversee key parameters and control plant operations in adherence to Indian grid code standards. It also generates customized reports and analytics to meet the diverse requirements of renewable energy plants, including those that integrate wind, solar, and BESS technologies. The solar and wind sectors are major contributors to new capacity in India's renewable energy market. As of July 31, 2024, installed solar power capacity was approximately 87 GW, while wind power capacity reached about 47 GW, according to the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. AB...
